How to Use the Shaping Tables

This tutorial explains how to use shaping tables to knit a top-down raglan sweater with a fully customizable fit. Instead of following long row-by-row instructions, the shaping table allows you to track independent increase rates for the neckline, sleeves, front, and back, making it easier to create a sweater that matches your body proportions.

A Different Approach to Top-Down Raglan Construction

Unlike traditional top-down raglan patterns that cast on in the round and use short rows to shape the back neck, this method begins by knitting flat. Starting flat provides greater control over neckline depth, shoulder fit, yoke depth, and overall sweater proportions before joining to work in the round.

Understanding the Shaping Table and Stitch Markers

The shaping table uses three different types of stitch markers to organize the sweater shaping:

  • A markers indicate front and back body (raglan) increases.
  • B markers indicate sleeve increases.
  • C markers indicate neckline increases while knitting flat.

Because each section of the sweater can increase at a different rate, the shaping table lets you see exactly which increases are worked on each row without having to follow lengthy written instructions.

Setting Up Your Sweater

Rather than tracking only neckline increases, these stitch counts also include increases worked beside the front body markers. Understanding this relationship makes it much easier to follow the shaping table and recognize that changing stitch counts are intentional—not mistakes.

Joining the Neckline and Working in the Round

Once the desired neckline depth has been reached, the tutorial demonstrates how to:

  • Cast on the center-front neckline stitches
  • Join the sweater to work in the round
  • Remove the neckline (C) markers
  • Continue only the body and sleeve increases

After joining, the neckline shaping is complete, and the shaping table transitions to tracking only the remaining raglan increases.

Customizing Front and Back Shaping

For adjusted versions of the shaping tables, the front and back increase rates may eventually separate.
