Body Measurements for a Knitting Pattern: How to Take Measurements for a Custom Fit
Getting accurate body measurements for a knitting pattern is the first step toward creating a sweater that actually fits your body. Instead of relying on standard sizing, my knitting patterns use shaping tables to customize the instructions to your proportions, helping you create a garment designed specifically for you.
This guide explains exactly how to take your body measurements for a knitting pattern, including every measurement required by the shaping tables used in my custom-fit sweater patterns.
How to Take Body Measurements for a Knitting Pattern
For the most accurate measurements, wear a close-fitting top and the undergarments you plan to wear underneath your finished sweater. Stand naturally throughout the process and keep your body relaxed. Your measuring tape should sit comfortably against your body without pulling tightly or compressing your shape.
If possible, have someone else take your measurements to help keep the tape level and ensure accuracy.
How to Measure Your High Bust for a Knitting Pattern
Your high bust measurement helps determine your upper torso width and is especially useful when customizing sweater fit.
To measure your high bust:
- Wrap the measuring tape around your chest just below your armpits.
- Keep the tape level all the way around your body.
- Relax your arms at your sides while taking the measurement.
Avoid lifting or pressing your arms against your body, as this can artificially increase your measurement.
How to Measure Your Full Bust
Your full bust measurement is taken around the fullest part of your bust and helps determine the amount of shaping and ease needed through the bust area.
To measure your full bust:
- Place the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust.
- Make sure the tape remains parallel to the floor.
- Keep your arms relaxed at your sides.
For the most accurate result, avoid changing your posture or pulling the tape tighter than it naturally sits.
How to Measure Your Front Bust Arc for a Knitting Pattern
The front bust arc measures the width of the front of your body between your side seams. This measurement helps customize bust shaping so your sweater follows your actual proportions rather than relying on a standard size.
To measure your front bust arc:
- Locate the centre of your torso beneath each arm where your side seams would sit.
- Measure straight across the front of your body from one side seam position to the other.
- Keep the measuring tape parallel to the floor.
An existing shirt or bra seam can sometimes help identify these points, but use your best judgement if those seams do not align with your natural body shape.
How to Measure Your Upper Arm Circumference
Your upper arm circumference helps ensure your sleeves have enough room for comfortable movement.
To measure your upper arm:
- Let your arm hang naturally in a relaxed position.
- Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your upper arm.
- Make sure the tape sits comfortably without compressing your arm.
Accurate upper arm measurements help prevent sleeves that feel tight or restrict movement, especially in fitted sweater designs.
Why Accurate Measurements Matter for Custom-Fit Knitting Patterns
Standard knitting sizes are based on averages, but real bodies are not built from averages. Taking your own body measurements allows you to adjust proportions like bust width, sleeve circumference, and shaping placement so your finished sweater fits the way you want it to.
My knitting patterns use shaping tables to help you translate your measurements into customized instructions, making it easier to create garments that fit your unique proportions.
