Customizability

Conventional patterns are created for you to knit exactly what the designer did. And unless you happen to match the mythical “standard” body shape that designers base their patterns on, you’re stuck guessing, experimenting, or doing a lot of complicated math to make them fit.

Some newer patterns use your measurements to adjust basic widths, but they still rely on generic shaping. So you might physically fit into the sweater, but it still won’t sit right.

My patterns generate custom instructions tailored not just to your size, but to your shape. No more surprise math halfway through a project. Just sweaters that actually fit, every time.

Because the point isn’t for you to knit my sweater – it’s for you to knit yours.

“Usually I have either the problem that the sleeves are too tight or the that the garment is too big at the shoulders. But not this time. The tee feels exactly right when I’m wearing it.”

How it works

Every customizable knitting pattern is made up of two parts: a pattern PDF and a custom shaping table. The PDF reads exactly like a regular knitting pattern, with step-by-step instructions, yarn requirements, a schematic, and all the parts that will make you feel at home.

Instead of following fixed shaping rates for certain sections of your sweater, like the shoulder shaping, the shaping table uses your measurements to produce custom instructions.

The pattern PDF will guide you through the entire project, including when to refer to the shaping table.

  1. Enter your measurements Fill in a short form with your body measurements.
  2. Get your custom shaping table Your table is generated instantly, built around your proportions — not a standard size.
  3. Cast on Your pattern PDF looks like a regular knitting pattern. It tells you exactly when to refer to your shaping table, so you’re never wondering which to follow.
  4. Knit a sweater that fits!

What adjustments does this system make?

At the moment, my customizable patterns can:

  • Adjust front and back width independently (because your front and back “halves” are never really equal)
  • Blend between sizes from the upper bust to full bust, and shoulder to upper arm (which ensures you get both a good fit around the shoulders, AND a good fit around your arms and your chest)
  • Generate custom horizontal bust darts on some patterns (not all patterns are suitable for darts).

As I flesh out this system, I’ll be slowly expanding the adjustment possibilities to include, among others:

  • Hip shaping (useful if your hips are wider than your chest)
  • Waist shaping where appropriate
  • Sleeve adjustments (to change shaping rates for long/short arms)
  • Armhole depth adjustments

My patterns are designed to be adjusted.

I know that I can’t possibly predict every tweak you’d like to make to your project, and I’m still learning how to accommodate every body shape!

This is why I provide plenty of context in my patterns to help you make your own, off-script adjustments:

  • Fit Points flag spots in the pattern where it’s easy to make an adjustment, with a suggestion of how to go about it
  • I let you know why I chose the techniques I did, so they’re easy to swap out if you prefer another
  • I always include a schematic!
  • And for the patterns that haven’t been updated with the customizability feature yet, I often provide adjustment documents with instructions on how to customize the pattern on your own.
